1979 Susan B. Anthony (SBA) $ Dollar 3 Piece Souvenir Set Uncirculated. Includes 1 dollar each from the Philadelphia Mint, the Denver Mint and the San Francisco Mint.
Intended to honor this pioneer in women's rights, legislation dated October 10, 1978, provided for the issuance of the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin. Obverse and reverse designs were both the work of the chief engraver of the U.S. Mint, Frank Gasparro, whose initials FG are located below the portrait and the eagle.
1979 SBA 3pc Souvenir Set
Placement of Susan B. Anthony's likeness on the dollar represented the first time that a woman other than a model or a mythical figure appeared on a circulating U.S. coin. The reverse design is the same as that used on the Eisenhower dollar. Mint marks P, D, or S are on the the obverse, slightly above Anthony's right shoulder. The size of this coin, its silver color, and it's edge reeding caused it to be confused with the quarter, and it failed to gain widespread public acceptance. No coins were made for circulation from 1981 to 1998. In 1999 additional pieces were made as a safeguard in anticipation of increased public demand before the Sacagawea dollar debuted in 2000.
